Our Mission

Behavior Analysis & Technology, Inc. is working to expand the basic understanding of the fundamental nature of visual attention. Although visual attention skills affect the quality of life of everyone, our research has primarily been directed toward understanding visual attention in young children and individuals with developmental disabilities. In conjunction with this research we are directly applying these findings to develop innovative technologies for detecting and diminishing attentional deficits. Based on "solid science" and taking about ten minutes to complete, your responses to a sequence of computer administered visual choices undergo a sophisticated automated analysis of several key aspects of visual attention. The results are immediately summarized and provided as an informative report at the end. You may also want to encourage a child under your care to try it and learn about his or her attentional skills. This can be particularly valuable at an early age since visual attention skills can affect learning and educational development. BA&T is striving to improve the education and clinical treatment provided to young children and individuals with behavioral disturbances and/or developmental disabilities. We are working to give individuals with behavioral disturbances, attentional disturbances, and special needs a greater opportunity to pursue their maximum level of development.

What We Do

Visual Attention Research. BA&T has an ongoing behavioral research program, primarily focused in the area of visual attention. The research has led to fundamental discoveries about the nature of visual attention in both young children and individuals with developmental disabilities. We publish our findings in both the print literature and in the electronic publication Behavior Analysis & Technology Monographs, and we make them freely available by either reprint or download. You may be particularly interested in our reported findings about overselective visual attention in young children (Full text article 1) and its possible impact on academic performance (Full text article 2).You may also want to view our initial findings concerning overselective attention to words in young children (Full text article 3). Our research related to overselective attention to words in young children yielded a procedure that appears to be effective for assessing its intensity (Full text article 4). This is important because early identification of the intensity of overselective attention to words could result in more individualized and effective reading programs that could significantly impact a child’s later academic achievement. More recently we looked at the effects of single-letter pretraining as a possible means for assessing and reducing overselective attention to words in young children (Full text article 5). You may find our 2017 Monograph particularly informative (Full text article 6). It provides an overview of our body of visual attention research findings, and discusses their implications for improving attentional skills that are fundamental for learning to occur in classroom settings. In our 2019 Monograph (Full text article 7) we also found that recording response topographies in addition to response accuracy with a software-administered procedure in a series of investigations provided a sensitive and fine-grained analysis of individual differences in how young children of typical development and adolescents with developmental disabilities attend to compound stimuli. In addition, administering the stimulus-control procedure online at remote sites where the author was not present also proved to be effective in assessing how participants attended to compound stimuli. Our latest 2023 Monograph (Full text article 8) expands on the findings of our 2019 monograph by introducing a more fine-grained analysis based on assessment of response latency as a third measure of visual attention. Technology Development. Closely associated with the visual attention research is a technology development program. The research has involved pioneering work with touch-screen technology, development of a sensitive multiple-assessment measurement technique, and comparative work with students with developmental disabilities and students of typical development. The company develops software based on its findings for assessing and remediating attentional deficits in both young children and individuals with developmental disabilities. Attentional Skills Assessment. BA&T utilizes its innovative technologies to provide effective and sensitive attentional skills assessments. You may want to try our new web-administered Visual Attention Assessment. The Assessment measures and analyzes key characteristics of visual attention and determines whether the child might benefit from repeating the exercise to improve attention skills. It is not only fun and enjoyable for the child, but it automatically generates a detailed analysis and report of the findings in real-time.

Behavioral Services. BA&T also provides behavioral services for individuals with behavioral disturbances or special needs. This includes behavioral consulting, behavioral assessments, and in-service training to schools, community programs, and families.
